What You Worship You Become

The title pretty much says it all.  If you worship a particular ideology, you will become like it.  If you worship an icon of society like a political figure, you will become like that person.  If you worship the truth, you become like the truth.  But which truth are you talking about because in our world there are supposedly multiple truths?

First of all, let us define truth.  According to Webster’s dictionary truth is “that which accords with fact or reality”.  For example, a math problem has one answer that is true not several answers.  In other words, there are not multiple truths but only one.

Now, we must decide where the truth resides.  Does it reside in politically correct philosophies, some religious dogma or in the Bible?  They can’t all be true as Webster pointed out.  In fact, in many ways they contradict each other, so there is no way they can all be true.

Two thousand years ago Jesus came to earth and fulfilled numerous prophecies of the Old Testament written hundreds of years before.  In addition, historians like Josephus attest to the truth of the New Testament.  Today you can go to Israel and walk where Jesus walked and visit churches on many of the prominent sites of the Old and New Testament.

Now, you can try and deny the facts of the preceding paragraph, but in the end there is no getting around them, and what is listed there is only the tip of the iceberg.  If what I have stated above is true(and it is quite easy to verify), then it is time to set aside the false and embrace biblical truth and place our worship where it belongs.

Labels Can Block Healing

Most everyone is fighting against some type of infirmity in their life.  In many cases a doctor labels us this or that medical term usually with a correct diagnosis.  The problem, though, with accepting such a label as “truth” and calling ourselves by such a word is that it can block God’s healing power in the process.  What we say about ourselves has tremendous power as this verse in Proverbs declares: “The power of life and death is in the tongue.”

Now, I am not suggesting that we stop going to doctors or stop taking medication if we in fact we are.  What I am suggesting is that we recognize that there is a higher truth that supersedes a doctor’s diagnosis.  When we feed spiritually on God’s words of healing in the Bible and proclaim  those words over our life, the labels of infirmity fall away and healing can begin.

This process often takes time and energy and so some give up, but with an extended effort over a period of time even the worst infirmity can see marked improvement.  “With God nothing is impossible.”

New Age Or New Birth

We have a very clear choice to make as stated above.  Let us look first of all at what is meant by the New Age.
The New Age encompasses numerous belief systems, but can usually be summed up in the following way.  We are all part of a huge universal soul or cosmic soul that makes up both living organisms and inanimate ones.  What we say or do according to the New Age affects this cosmic soul, but what or who are you in essence praying to?  Since you are part of this universal soul you are essentially praying to yourself.  I am praying to myself to solve the myriad of problems around me.  Now, how many people do each of us know who has it all together and can solve the toughest problems on the earth?  If we are honest, we’ll admit none of us can fix even ourselves or even those closest to us much less the world.  My praying to or, if you will, through myself does little or no good.
Now, let’s look at the New Birth.  The premise behind the New Birth is that I am a sinner in need of help from someone outside of myself.  That help was sent by God from heaven in the form of baby Jesus.  Jesus grew up and willingly went to the cross to die for our sins.  Our faith in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross connects us to Father God and releases the Holy Spirit into our lives.  It is that connection which also releases God’s grace and power to overcome whatever we are facing if we participate in staying connected through Bible reading, church attendance, Christian media, etc.  I am not praying to and/or through myself to change bad situations but praying in Jesus’ name to Father God who created the universe.
If you have not already done so, choose the New Birth and confess to God that you are a sinner in need of forgiveness.  By faith, accept Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for your sins.

Banish Liars…

Recently, in two different directions I have had to deal with big time lying.  What happens when you confront a liar?  They just lie some more or say they don’t recall what they said or some such words.  Even in the face of two witnesses they can maintain their innocence.  So what do you do in a relationship that is going nowhere fast?

You can take the conversation to a higher authority and let them be the judge: in a business that may be a boss, in a family that may be a parent.  As a Christian we can even go before the throne of God in prayer and plead our case.  If Jesus is our Savior, he is also our attorney in heaven.  If our cause is just, we can trust the God of the universe to vindicate us and bring enduring justice.  This may not happen overnight, but trust that God has the final say.  Forgive the other person as God forgives each of us and leave it in God’s hands.

Teachable or Intractable?

As we navigate the curves and straightaways of life we all have lessons to learn that God is trying to teach us. If we learn them quickly through following God’s biblical guidelines and praying ahead of time, we can usually avoid many of the more serious problems in life. However, if we cling to our stubborn ways and harden our hearts to God’s life lessons, then serious problems will almost certainly face us. Jonah is a great example of someone who ignored God’s directives and ended up in a disgusting place. Let’s come humbly and repentantly before God when our errors confront us and willingly do what Jesus, our Master and Savior, wants us to do. Such a route is by far the easiest in the long run.

In Light Of Eternity

Several years ago I attended a graduation at a Christian school where the principal gave a message loosely based on a popular Christian song entitled “Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing.” What is the main thing? Jesus Christ and Him crucified and risen again. If the message of salvation through faith Jesus Christ is not apparent somewhere in our daily life, what we are doing has little if any eternal significance.

Great Movies Out

There are a number of new Christian movies out now or about to be released. Here is the list:
1) Grace Unplugged is about a girl’s relationship with her father as she embarks on a singing career.
2) Linsanity is a documentary of Jeremy Lin’s journey from obscurity to starting point guard of the Houston Rockets.
3) The Christmas Candle is a great family movie based on a Max Lucado book.
4) I’m In Love With A Church Girl has a great message for the unchurched and stars a famous rapper.

Following the Word or the World

The Word of God in the Bible clearly contradicts the media-driven world around us on a number of issues. The question is whether we are going to follow what popular culture says or what God says. The bottom line is that in the long run God can’t bless those who follow popular culture where it goes directly against the Word of God.

Just Doing Or Becoming

Being busy is not the same as becoming. To constantly be doing something and not taking the time to grow in our Christian faith is a mistake. When Jesus came to Mary and Martha’s house, Martha complained to Jesus because Mary was not busy serving others like Martha but learning spiritual truths from Jesus. Jesus made clear to Martha that Mary had made the correct choice. Sitting at the feet of Jesus by studying the Bible, praying, etc. is of primary importance in our daily endeavors if our work is to have the agape love of God in it. Without God’s love empowering our lives we are hollow, worthless sounds.

In The Nick Of Time

Don’t you just wish there was always someone who always shows up just in the nick of time? Well, there is someone who promises “never to leave or forsake us”. Of course, that someone is God for those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. However, God is not some genie in a bottle who comes when we call but has purposes and plans often beyond our own. The process of flowing with God’s purposes and plans becomes much easier the more we conform our lives into what the Bible says we need to become. As we meditate on the Word of God, we are transformed by “the renewing our minds”.
